A 2.7 MeV proton microbeam is used to detect traces of fluorine via the gamma-rays emitted by the reaction 19F(p,alpha-gamma)16O (-> NRA).
In collaboration with the Laboratory for Radiochemistry and Environmental
Chemistry (PSI and University of Berne) the technique has been used to determine the exposure duration of meteorites
on the antarctic ice, among those the famous mars meteorite ALH84001.
The possibility to apply this method to the dating of ancient bones has also been investigated.
The same analysis procedure is applied to geological samples in order
to determine the F-content of mineral grains.
