The mission of the laboratory comprises fundamental research in ion beam technologies, instrumental developments, applications of ion beam technologies, user service, and teaching duties within the educational program of ETH.

The long-lasting history of LIP is going back to the late 1970’ties when the potential of technologies invented in connection with nuclear physics experiments became visible for a wide range of applied research projects. Jointly operated by ETH Zurich and the external pagePaul Scherrer Institut (PSI) since 1984, LIP was fully integrated into the ETH Zurich structure in 2008. A curatorial board was established to maintain LIP operation reflecting the multi-disciplinary character of the ongoing research program and the enormous diversity of possible application fields for AMS and ion beam technologies.

LIP facilities are available for national and international research institutions, in particular, for the Swiss Cantonal Archaeological Institutions. Services such as radiocarbon dating can be provided on semi-commercial basis for private and industrial customers. Here, and especially in connection with dating of art or art-historic objects, LIP enjoys a worldwide excellent reputation. Our laboratory is equipped with sophisticated accelerator facilities covering the energy range from 40 keV to 50 MeV in order to meet the needs for the diverse applications.
